Chiller System Problems - Excessive Noise

SUMMARY
This article provides the information of how to fix a chiller system when it is producing excessive noise on startup. The most common cause of this problem is the compressor’s internal scroll running backwards.

SYMPTOMS
Compressor making excessive noise at startup.

CAUSE
Three phase scroll compressor running backwards.

RESOLUTION
Condition normally occurs at initial startup of chiller. Most common cause is the compressor’s internal scroll running backwards. Most likely, all other three phase motors within the chiller will be running the wrong direction as well.

To correct this problem, switch any two legs on the CHILLERS three phase power buss. This will cause all three phase motors to turn the correct direction and should eliminate the excessive compressor noise.

APPLIES TO
All three phase chiller models
